The Legion of Mary began in Dublin, Ireland on September 7, 1921. It is now the largest lay apostolic organization in the Catholic Church, with well over ten million active Legionaries throughout the world. The Legion has been approved by the last six Popes through Pope John Paul II, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. It has been active in Oman since 1984 in Ruwi Parish and since 1989 in Ghala Parish. In fact, the Legion of Mary had set up a Praesidium in Ghala even before the Parish Church was inaugurated. For anyone to join the Legion of Mary, the first step is to visit any praesidium meeting. You are always welcome and can go on one of the work assignments with an experienced member if you choose. The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who:

The Legion works include the following:
- Visiting the sick at hospitals and the housebound.
- Participating/leading the Rosary in the church. - In May and October each year, the Pilgrim statue of Our Lady is taken to Parishioner’s homes and we join/lead the recitation of the Rosary. - We attend and encourage attendance at pilgrimages and retreats. - Some of our members actively participate in various ministries/activity groups in the parish namely, teaching catechism to our parish children, Ushers, Techno Ministry, Eucharistic Ministry, etc. - We support various church events as required and remain at the disposal of the parish clergy in assisting as and when called upon. Legionaries are under the guidance of a spiritual director named by the Parish Priest. The Legion is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the Priest. |
Types of membership :
Active members: They regularly attend the weekly sessions of their praesidium and pray daily the prayer of the Legion, the Catena Legionis. Their main role lies in active apostolate for the Legion and the Church.
Auxiliary members: They support the Legion through their prayer. They pray the whole booklet of Legion prayers, the Tessera, every day. The Tessera consists of the Invocation, prayers to the Holy Spirit, the Rosary, the Catena, and the concluding prayers of the Tessera.
Praetorians: This is a higher grade of active membership. In addition to their duties as active members, Pretorians pray the Rosary, the Divine Office and go to Holy Mass daily.
Adjutorians: A higher grade of auxiliary membership. Adjutorians additionally pray the Divine Office and go to Holy Mass daily
